Every feeling and emotion
eventually fades away. Christmas doesn’t feel the same as it did when you were
a child. Things in general get a little bit less exciting as we get older and
experience different things. But the sort of excitement that rises up and fuels
us when the World Cup comes around is a feeling like no other.
Everyone in the world comes
together as one. We unite, we argue, we cheer, we celebrate, we dance, we sing,
we watch the beautiful game. Together. When it comes around, it’s like it is the
main and only focus of the entire world. There is absolutely nothing better
than watching your country’s team suit up to watch none other than The World
Cup.
Now, no
matter where you are from, whether it is Brazil, Italy, Portugal, Ghana,
Germany, England, anywhere, preparing to watch the World Cup is an
indescribable feeling. There’s this thing that comes with watching the world
cup and living in Canada. Since majority of the population is Canadian born, we
tend to go for the teams where our family’s roots are from (this being because
Canada hasn’t had a national team to cheer for since 1986, the first and only
time). It’s inevitable that everyone is going to pick a side during the world
cup, and the end result of this is adding another layer of drama to the drama
that already exists on the pitch.
There is an
overwhelming problem when it comes to Canadians and the World Cup. We butt
heads because we are all on opposing teams. During the Olympics we were all on
the same side, therefore uniting us a nation. The opposite of this happens
during The World Cup. People gang up on certain countries and somehow the
entire world, nation vs. nation is against each other. All of this dies down
when the whistle is blown because we pause and we take time out of our busy
days to watch the spectacle known as the World Cup. The worldwide phenomenon
brings us to our feet, cheering and screaming for our team to score a goal.
To me, the
feeling of seeing those flags of everyone’s teams fixated on their car windows
during the World Cup is something that I love to see. Thinking back to 2006
when I was just a little girl in the third grade walking around the playground
seeing everyone in his or her jerseys as the World Cup was on is something that
I’ll never forget. Watching Fabio Grosso take the penalty shot to win Italy the
world cup is an image that I will never get out of my head. The World Cup
brings about that “Where were you moment?”.
Where were you when Italy won in 2006? Where were you when Spain won in
2010? Where will you be this year? Get ready because it’s here ladies and
gentlemen. The beautiful game. The World Cup 2014.
